The effect of polyunsaturated fatty acids Omega-3 on remission maintenance in patients with Crohn’s Disease
Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews 2009; 1
Results of recent prospective, randomized studies suggest the efficacy of polyunsaturated ω‑3 (n‑3 LC‑PUFA), inter alia in prevention of cardiovascular diseases and diseases of immune or inflammation origin. Beneficial effect of n-3 LC PUFA is probably secondary to their anti-inflammatory, anti-coagulant, anti-arrhytmic and hypolipodemic properties. Supplementation with polyunsaturated ω‑3 acids reduces arachidonic acid level, leading to inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines release and reduced inflammatory cell responses.
