Practically every child under 3 years of age will get acute gastroenteritis. This pathology has a rather mild course, but it is associated with a high number of hospitalizations and generates high costs of health care. Due to this and the fact that acute gastroenteritis is still a major problem of pediatrics, ESPGHAN and ESPID decided jointly to upgrade and standardize diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in the course of acute gastroenteritis in children. Due to commonness of the problem, we introduce the most important changes and key findings, which are included in the principles of proceeding published in 2008.1
